Rolling Tray Sizes Explained: Small, Medium and Large Compared

Rolling tray sizes are not standardised, so a "small" tray from one brand can be almost as big as a "medium" from another. This guide explains how to read tray measurements and compares four real trays from our catalogue, from a compact 20 x 16cm tray to a 34 x 27.5cm large format.

Quick comparison

Each card below shows the size stated on the product listing. Measurements are length x width as listed by the brand; depth and weight are not listed for these models unless noted.

What matters when choosing a rolling tray size?

Read the measurements, not the size label

Brands use "mini", "small", "medium" and "large" differently. In our examples, the RAW Black Small (27.5 x 17.5cm) and the Smoke Arsenal Medium (28 x 18cm) are within a centimetre of each other, even though one is called small and the other medium. Always compare the listed length and width. If you are buying a tray to fit a drawer, shelf or bag, measure that space first and allow a little room around the edges.

Workspace and what you keep on the tray

A tray is mainly a clean, flat surface that keeps papers, filter tips, a grinder and small accessories together. A compact tray such as the Greengo (20 x 16cm) suits a few items at a time. Mid-size trays around 28 x 18cm leave room for a grinder plus a pack of papers or cones side by side. A large tray like the RAW Girl Large (34 x 27.5cm) gives roughly double the surface area of the 28 x 18cm format, which helps if you like to keep several items laid out at once, but it takes up more table space.

Portability and storage

Smaller trays are easier to slide into a drawer or a rolling station box, and they are lighter to carry around the house. Large trays often stay in one place. If you already own a storage case, check its internal dimensions against the tray size before ordering. Our guide to storing smoking accessories covers keeping papers and grinders in good condition.

Material and extra features

Three of our examples are listed as metal trays: the RAW Black Small ("RAWthentic metal construction"), the Smoke Arsenal Medium ("high quality metal") and the RAW Girl Large ("premium metal construction", supplied with a certificate of authenticity). The Greengo tray is listed as made from recycled materials and includes a built-in rolling device. Metal trays generally wipe clean easily; whichever material you choose, follow any care advice on the product page and avoid harsh abrasives that could scratch printed artwork.

Frequently asked questions

What is a standard rolling tray size?

There is no official standard. Many popular metal trays sit around 27 to 29cm long and 17 to 18cm wide, which brands may call small or medium. Large formats are often 30cm or more on the longer side. Check the listed dimensions on each product page.

Is a bigger tray always better?

Not necessarily. A larger surface gives more room, but it needs more storage space and is less convenient to move. Choose the size that fits where you will keep it and how many items you normally lay out.

Are the linked products available in different designs?

Several trays in our catalogue come in different artwork or sizes as separate listings. The prices shown here are for the selected catalogue listing; visit each product page for current options and availability.

Accuracy and buying notes

Sizes and materials in this guide are taken from the product titles and descriptions in our catalogue on the day of writing. Tray depth, weight and exact metal type are not listed for these models, so we have not stated them. The surface-area comparison is simple length x width arithmetic from the listed figures.
